At Mattress Works, we don’t require you to buy a new box spring or foundation with your mattress. Your existing foundation won’t prevent you from receiving our Miraculous Mattress Promise or your mattress warranty.
However,
We do inspect your current box spring or foundation to make sure it’s rigid, supportive, and level across its surface. Roughly 60% of the time, we find that a customer’s current box spring or platform is still in great shape. The other 40% of the time, it isn’t. The quality of your foundation can have a major impact on your mattress’s comfort, support, and longevity.
Here are a few things to check:
-
No flexing or movement. A modern mattress performs best on a flat, rigid, and even surface. Each of our 12 mattresses uses individually pocketed coils, and a firm, supportive surface beneath the mattress can make a big difference in its comfort and longevity.
-
No dips or sags. If your box spring or foundation has visible dips or sags, it may need to be replaced. Here’s an example of a box spring that needs replacing:

-
A flat, even surface. Use a straightedge to check that the surface is flat from side to side and end to end. Missing center support can also cause a box spring or foundation to sag.
What happens if my box spring has “issues”?
If we find that your box spring or foundation isn’t providing the support your mattress needs, we can replace it with one of our Built Right Platform bases. We keep them on our truck, and they cost about the same as a box spring—sometimes less. They provide the firm, rigid support your new mattress needs, offer extra clearance beneath the bed, and can fit inside many existing headboard, footboard, and rail setups.
If you prefer a traditional box spring, we also carry our Craftsman 9-inch and 5-inch foundations. They’re built to be solid and supportive. The same family that builds our mattresses also builds these foundations from scratch in the same factory.
Still unsure about your current box spring or foundation? Call or message us. We’re happy to help you figure out what’s right for your mattress, even if you didn't buy it from us.
